We see websites such as the pirate bay telling American "brand owners" to fuck right off when trying to approach them using the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) [ copyright.gov (PDF) - Wikipedia:DMCA ] as a means to get content removed from their website. Which is very true, the DMCA is a US law, which does not have jurisdiction outside of the USA. So, when I'm googling for chernobyl webcam, note - I'm in the UK, and using Google's UK search engine. Why the fuck am I seeing this:

Here is the complaint - So, it's illegal to search for things because... The Director of Internet Enforcement says so, who the fuck is that? ICANN? RIPE? I will look into filing a complaint Here (PDF).

Regardless or not, Google provides a worldwide service, and censors for places like China.. I am not on American soil, and I'm not under the jurisdiction of US law. See screenshot of how Google censors images in China:

It would appear that the above Google search link has expired as such that it doesn't provide you with the defamatory link about the DMCA while using the search string "chernobyl webcam". However, I will still follow this up in due course. Because to my beliefs the DMCA has no place on a UK search engine. As searching for serials.ws still brings up an alert about DMCA regulated censorship within the realms of the UK.

When Google said oke to China's censorship on their search enigne, I think Google started to dig their own grave. ATM Google still keeps getting bigger and bigger and more powerfull. but I guess sometimes soon it will go another way. Well at least I hope it will, time for a new search engine to rise!

Mosterman: Have you noticed any google/DMCA based censorship, wherever that may be? I'm curious as to build a profile, in Australia, my search results yielded no DMCA/Chillingeffects.org censorship links.

I'm from Holland No type of censorship to be found on google.nl when I'm using it. I don't see any DMCA based messages telling me anything about censorship, when searching for "chernobyl webcam" or whatever other thing im searching for.

I believe they have to do that because Google is a US-registered company. Any UK-based search engine doesn't have to comply with the DMCA - thank fuck!

Hi Rik/Martin, welcome.

Well, I was giving this example to a friend the other day, in relation to this DMCA censorship worldwide. If I had a company in England, I would have to adhere to UK tax laws/civil laws. If my company expanded and I moved to say Germany, I would have to follow the German tax laws/civil laws. So, if I went to Germany and said fuck off, I respect/follow English law, the courts would laugh at me.

Why is this no different for Google?

i suspect it has something to do with the large government contracts that they have - and the although they may have some legal claim to get round it, ultimately it would cost them these contacts. Something they are not prepared to do - after all they are not some altruistic organization but corporation with greedy share holders.

It's from last year, but it lists 25 counties with Government controlled content filtering:

Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Burma/Myanmar, China, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, UAE, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen.

I imagine it's still on the rise.

I usually use yahoo for searching. I haven't noticed any result filtering there unless they just do it without telling you.

I've never seen that message.

Google censors himself but it regrets its choice and decides to confess it. It would have stayed unnoticed otherwise.
